Hrithik Roshan
"As an actor, everybody starts from scratch, because no matter who's behind you, up there you are all by yourself," says Hrithik Roshan, the third generation of two premier film families (he has music composer Roshan and filmmaker J. Om Prakash as his grandfathers). Hrithik assisted his director father Rakesh Roshan for five years before the latter launched him in the glamorous, youthful and romantic thriller 'Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hai'.
As a kid all that Hrithik Roshan ever wanted to do was act, even though his parents would rather have had him opt for something more secure. However, Hrithik was not deterred by the insecurities that are so integral to the film world. He had grown up seeing his father grapple with failure. There were times when there was no money in the house and cars were mortgaged.
In Bollywood, where good-looking star sons are prime property, for Hrithik Roshan making his debut was a healthy struggle. He started out as a third assistant to his father and 'Karan Arjun' was his first full-fledged film. As an assistant Hrithik didn't enjoy any special privileges of a star son. He was treated like one of the crew.
His ultimate dream though was to be an actor. Without a word to his parents he got his pictures done and only when he liked what he saw did he show them to his parents. He then joined Kishore Namit Kapoor's acting academy, again without his father's knowledge. His first major break came from Rakesh Roshan for 'Kaho Na... Pyaar Hain', which went on to become a huge success.
The sea-green eyes come from his father and the pumped-up physique is thanks to good friend and gym buddy Salman Khan who trained him in the initial stages but the talent which has attracted film-makers like Raj Kanwar, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Vikram Bhatt is his own, honed by persistent hard work. According to Hrithik, working with dad was no cakewalk. He had to consciously leave aside the role of an assistant and wear the cloak of an actor.
On the personal front Hrithik Roshan has a plain 'n' simple image, committed to his lady love Suzanne Khan. Discos, he believes is a complete waste of money.
Hrithik Roshan has all that it takes to make women go weak in the knees - rippling muscles, devastating light-green eyes, a killer smile and an affable charm. Ask any shutterbug worth his Nikon and he can't stop raving aloud about those oh-so-purrfect muscles, that dreamy good look, that abundance of confidence, the obvious talent.
His USP is his physiognomy, which is a unique mix of a child-man. While his Schwarzenegger pectorals give him that pin-up appeal, his face and ocean green eyes convey a baby's vulnerability. Perhaps that's what draws women/girls to him.
Hrithik is rumoured to have bagged Shah Rukh Khan's next home production, to be directed by Farah Khan. Ask him and the shy guy shrugs, "Yes, the negotiations are on," says a modest Roshan Jr.
